5,000 Subway Cards

by Tanya on May 4, 2011

Stephen Shaheen, an artist based in Brooklyn NYC, found a useful purpose for all those discarded metro tickets we typically throw away. He used craigslist to source 5,000 discarded tickets and used them to create “metrobench” for a recent exhibit on metro card art. I love the nontraditional use of materials in this work and how the artist has successfully reused a common item that we normal see as garbage to create something new and interesting. I also really like how the tickets create a uniform pattern when positioned together in this way. The black bands create a series of lines that flow around the curves of the bench and emphasize its form.
